Public Rallied During Crisis
Public response to the Red Cross Society’s requests for assistance during the recent crisis in the city was most gratifying, according to Mrs R. I. Brake, president of the North Canterbury centre. A request for drivers on Thursday met with an “overwhelming" response and the centre has been inundated with offers of accommodation and practical help. Few of the accommodation offers were needed as most of those evacuated found homes with friends, but the centre was successful in finding board for a young couple who will need a home for three or four months. Mrs Brake expects further requests for assistance from people who find bedding and clothing damage when they return to their homes. The local effort began on Thursday when a person telephoned the centre offering the use of a caravan for distributing soup. Members of the Sumner Red Cross Society worked through the night on Thursday, mainly attending to the comfort of the army and police handling the rescue operation. Mrs Brake said she was
telephoned by the police at 3 a.m. on Friday to say that a depot was being set up in the Mount Pleasant Community Centre. She rang three members of the Woolston Red Cross sub-centre and they arrived at 5.30 a.m. to assist her.
