Record Toll Demand
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, April 16. Last Wednesday’s storm provided the Wellington toll exchange with a record of 34,266 outward calls. The Wahine disaster and the train delays in the Hutt Valley created heavy demands on all Post Office telephone and telegraph services. The pre-Easter period is normally the second busiest time of the year for the tolls services.
Average day outward toll calls number from 25,000 to 27,000, a spokesman for the Post Office said today. The previous record of 30,331 calls was set before the Christmas of 1966.
