ADDINGTON MARKET Strong Sale For Small Entry Of Fat Sheep

Fat sheep and fat lambs met a very strong sale at Addington market yesterday. Entries in both sections were the smallest of the year.

With an entry of only 70 head, fat lambs met a buoyant sale, and values showed a marked rise. A similar trend was seen in the fat sheep section, where wethers regularly sold at $7 and more.

With a short trading week, cattle were not in such strong demand. Values opened fully firm, but as the yarding built up, steers and heifers eased a little. Cows however, sold strongly throughout. Vealers and dairy cattle were easier, but both fat pigs and store pigs were firmer. Fat Lambs Fat lambs met a strong sale. With an entry of 715 head, compared with 870 last week, the yarding was again a small one. While there was a fair selection of good butchers' lambs, the strength of the market reflected the light entry, and all classes were 50c a head stronger than last week, and In a number of cases the rise was greater. Following a light sale of lambs earlier in the day, the market was a very strong one, with both ewes and wethers showing a rise on last sale. Wether values were fully firm on last week, and some of the best quality lots appeared to be 30c stronger. The small entry of ewes met a very good sale, and values improved 40c a head.

Fat Cattle There w»« a very small yarding at the start of the fat cattle sale, but late arrivals built the entry up to 377, compared with 259 last week. Quality, generally, was only fair. A number of pens showed the effects of recent bad weather. There was a very light entry of heifers and cows. Values for all classes opened up fully arm on last week's rates, but as the size ot the entry Increased, values for steers and heifers edged back to close a little below last week’s rates. Cows, however, had a good sale throughout. Prime heavy steer beef sold to 817.25 per 1001 b, prime med-ium-weight from 118 to 810; prime heavy heifer beef 81* to *18.50. prime medium-weight from 817 to 818: prime butchers’ cow beef *l6 to *l7, and lighter from *l5 to *15.75. The heifer entry included some backward types, but for anything showing some quality, there was a ready demand. For most of the yarding, however, values were not as strong as last week. The best of the heifers sold from *l3B to *l5O, average to good from *llO to (125. and others down to *lOO. Two Friesian cows sold from *123 to *l3B. Vealers With a short trading week, demand in the veal section was not as strong as last week, and vealers and calves were 92 to S 3 easier. The yarding was 85 head. The best of the vealers sold from $63 to $6B, with odd sales to $77; medium vealers sold from $55 to $6l, and smaller from $5O to $54. Best calves sold from $5O to $54, with an odd sale to $6O; medium calves from $4O to $47, and small from $3O to $37. Fat Pigs There was a very small offering of fat pigs this week, and quality was quite good. Values showed an improvement on late rates, this being mainly because of the small entry. An odd pen of slips was on a par with recent rates, but one pen of big stores met strong competition, and were 30c to 40c better than last week’s rates. Two in-pig large White sows, due to fourth litters, sold at $27. Values were: Weaners, $2.10 to $3.20. Slips, $3.40 to $4.10. Small and medium stores, $4.60 to $6.60. Large stores, to $9.70.
