Nails Stop Rugby
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON. No Rugby was played at Athletic Park over Easter because the playing surface was littered with hundreds of nails. They had been flung on to the Held as sheets of corrugated iron had been lifted from the roof of the main stand by last week's southerly gale. “There was too much danger of serious Injury,” the chairman of the Wellington Rugby Union (Mr C. G. Gibbons) said, “so we decided to close the ground.” The caretaker, Mr P. A. Hinds, has since taken more than three bucket loads of nails from the ground.
