Avoca Valley Residents Put Case For Sewer
A temporary sewer for the residents of Avoca Valley would take 12 to 18 months to complete and would cost $27,000 plus the cost of laterals—about $l5OO for each house, a meeting of residents was told last evening. The meeting was attended by the chairman of the Christchurch Drainage Board (Mr F. W. Price), the chief engineer (Mr P. J. McWilliam) and the board member for the district (Mr C. H. Russell). Mr Price advised the residents to send a deputation to put a case to the board for either permanent or temporary works.
The meeting was told that the area could not expect to have the proposed Chapmans Road-Port Hills Road extension available for connection until mid-1971, and that depended on finance and staffing.
If the board agreed to put in temporary works the residents would have to meet the
I cost, which would be re- : funded at the time when the : board would normally have I reticulated the area. Mr Price I said that temporary works , could not be financed out of ' loan money. Residents mentioned the health hazard which existed ] under the present system and -were told that although that i influenced their priority with I the board, there were still technical difficulties of getting to the main sewer. Even if the Health Department requisitioned sewerage for the area, it could not be provided until the main facilities reached the vicinity. Mr Russell said that the health hazard was not the board’s responsibility. It was caused by development being permitted in an area where it was known that sewerage could not be supplied for some time.
Mr Price said that a compromise solution was possible if the residents approached the board with a proposal.
