The Storm

Sir,—l wish all those irresponsible people who came sightseeing round Sumner on Thursday and Friday had stuck in the mud and got drenched getting out. They were nothing but a curse to people trying to protect and salvage their property. I realise people are interested to see what damage has been done, but damaged property does not belong to the public. In half an hour no fewer than 10 car-loads of people stopped and poked around a Sumner house shown on television on Friday night. They peered in the windows and investigated the contents of the garage. A Mount Pleasant home-owner complained that trippers climbing on his roof had done more damage than the storm. This is trespassing and vandalism, and should be treated as siich.—Yours, etc., C. R. MARKS. April 14, 1968.
