Estimated 5000 Attend Gymkhana At Chertsey

A crowd of about 5000 persons attended the annual Chertsey gymkhana and non-totalisator trotting meeting yesterday. Always a popular feature among Easter attractions in the Ashburton district, the gymkhana was held in cool but fine conditions.

The trotting circuit was in good order in spite of the recent heavy rainfall but the cycle track, portions of which had lain under water during the storm, was heavy and slow and times were about 45sec slower in the two-mile mid-Canterbury championship event than in other years on fast conditions.

A full programme of events attracted patrons from early in the momint and many hundreds of cars thronged the car park and roads adjoining the Chertsey domain. Gate takings were Slob 3. The gymkhana was organised by the Chertsey Gymkhana Club and the Chertsey Trotting Club. The trotting programme comprised nine races and the turnover on the equalisator was $5OOO. Entries were particularly .high in the various gymkhana attractions, l.'ere were increased entries m the pony events which continued for most of the day, while Highland dancing continued for several hours on two stages to cater for the record 70 entries. The baby show proved very popular and atracted 63 entries. Displays by girls from Buckett’s gymnasium, Christchurch, have become a regular feature of the gymkhana attractions and the team of 14 girls yesterday entertained the large crowd with an amazing variety of gymnastic and balancing feats. Girls aged about five and six years amazed patrons with their cart-wheeling and balancing while the prowess of the older members of the team in a variety of gymnastics, trick cycling, balancing, and other manoeuvres was of a high order. The damp grass affected certain trick cycling acts but the skill of the members still showed through. Stalls, sideshows and a lolly scramble and other attractions added to the carnival atmosphere of the gymkhana. The following were the results: — Trotting Event* The trotting club held Its annual non-totallsator meeting in conjunction with the gymkhana. Turnover on the equallaator was 85000.
