Obituary Miss A. E. Clark

Miss Anne Elizabeth Clark, who lost her life in the Wahine disaster, was one of Canterbury’s bes t - known nurses. She was a former matron of the Oxford and Ellesmere hospitals and was night supervisor at the Christchurch Hospital for a total of nearly 20 years. Miss Clark will be remembered for her dedication to the care of the sick, her unfailing kindness and generosity to those in neeed of help. Most of her long career in nursing was associated with the North Canterbury Hospital Board. She trained at the Christchurch Hospital and graduated in 1927. After two years as a ward sister at the hospital she did a midwifery course at St Helens Hospital, then trained as a Karitane nurse at Dunedin. She then spent 18 months as a psychiatric nurse at Hanmer Hospital. Next came her appointments as matron of Oxford Hospital and later matron of Ellesmere Hospital. In 1937 she returned to the Christchurch Hospital as night supervisee and at the beginning of 1939 she left for a visit to Britain and Europe. On her return to New Zealand in 1940 she resumed work as night superviser at Christchurch Hospital, retiring from this position in 1956. After a -short break she re-

' Miss Clark was ar member of the Rose Muir Association, the Registered Nurses’ Association and the Christchurch North Garden Club. At the time of her, death, she was on her way to New Plymouth to spend a holiday with friends. Miss Clark is survived by one sister, Mrs A. Ryde, and two brothers, Messrs C. V. and C. T. Clark, all of Christchurch. A service for Miss Clark will be held at the Nurses’ Chapel, Christchurch Hospital, at 2 p.m. tomorrow.
