Embarrassing Ride
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The jockey, G. P. Chitty, had an embarrassing moment at the Ellerslie race meeting yesterday. During the preliminary gallop he parted company with his mount, Merry Men, which took off at high speed around the course. Undaunted, Chitty hitched a lift behind a mounted clerk of the course on a giant grey and the chase was on. To the cheers of the crowd they thundered past the grandstand, the clerk resplendent in red jacket, jodphurs and riding hat, and the relatively tiny jockey bouncing behind him. Eventually Merry Men was caught and the Islington Handicap was started.
