BURSARS URGED
Bursars were needed for schools with rolls of, say, 950 or more to relieve senior staff of many details of administration which robbed them of teaching time, the headmaster of the Mairehau High School (Mr A. B. Ryan) told the board of governors. Mr Ryan said that in the last month his senior staff had spent hours working on the free text-book scheme, school fees, attendance records, and other matters which required responsible oversight but not a teacher. These senior staff could not give full attention to their own teaching and help to younger teachers. « The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said the board had power to appoint a bursar from its incidental grant, but it would need more funds Mr Ryan said a bursar was a necessary post in a large school, not a facility to be chosen from others. The board elected Mr C. T. Ford chairman and Mr W. J Cartwright deputy-chairman. A tape recorder and bookkeeping machine will be bought for the secretarial course, and an overhead projector.
