Gaol Break Admitted

(N Z. Press Association)' AUCKLAND, April 12. Mihaly Bede, aged 27, who broke out of Auckland Prison on March 3, appeared before Mr J. R. Drummond, S.M., to answer five charges. He admitted escaping from gaol. Bede was appearing for sentence for resisting a constable at Waiwera on December 25, a charge to which he had pleaded guilty. Counsel (Mr B. K. Shenkin) said he did not wish to make submissions on the resisting charge. Bede was sentenced to three months gaol. On two charges—assaulting the same constable at Waiwera on December 25 with intent to facilitate flight, and possessing burglary instruments on the same day, to

which he had pleaded not guilty, Bede was remanded to May 9. On a charge of possessing gelignite at Ohinewai on April 9, except for some lawful purpose, he was remanded to May 9 without plea. The Magistrate declined jurisdiction and on the gaol escape charge committed Bede to the Supreme Court for sentence. Senior-Sergeant R. R. Richards said that Bede appeared before the same Magistrate on February 29 and admitted nine charges. He was also committed to the Supreme Court for sentence on these. Two men, arrested with Bede at Ohinewai—Michael Davidson, aged 26, a painter, and Brian Raymond Brett, aged 34, a painter—appeared handcuffed together. Both were charged with possessing gelignite on April 9 at Ohinewai and being accessories to assisting Bede, a person who had escaped from Auckland Prison. Davidson was remanded in custody until April 18. Brett was also remanded to April 18.
