Boys Surprise In Skating

Two Hastings 15-year-olds, G. Hayes and V. Hanaray, pleasantly surprised the national selectors with their speed and drive at the second series of speed trials held by the New Zealand Federation of Roller Skating, at the Riccarton Mall yesterday morning.

Hayes completed the sevenmile men’s trial ahead of Hanaray, and R. Seddon (Canterbury) was a solid third. His time was 22min 17.6 sec. The selectors (Messrs R. Young, convener, I. R. Hughes and F. Britt) have reduced considerably the original squad for the final trial at Trafalgar Park, Nelson, on May 11, but the names will not be available until next week. The leading Canterbury man, G. Glover, began quickly in the five-mile trial and quickly spreadeagled the field with sustained speed. He was asked to retire at the four-

mile mark when in the lead because the selectors did not want to risk further injury to a knee which he hurt in the five-mile road race on Sunday. Only five of the 19 starters in the men’s trial completed the distance. The Masterton trio, G. Hailes, G. Brader. and D. Creighton, were disappointing. Although they have had a testing week-end they were expected to show more staying power than they did. Miss R. Alexander (Canterbury) won all the women’s events—the 2000 metres trial and the two sprints.
