Coalminers On Strike

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) TOKYO, April 15. The 51,400-strong Japanese coalminers’ union, T.A.N.R.0., today launched a series of strikes to press for the nationalisation of coalmines and for higher wages. Workers in seven major mines intend to strike for 48 hours, on Mondays and Tuesdays, and for an indefinite period on Thursdays and Fridays, and workers in about 30 medium and small coalmines will down tools for 24 hours every Monday. Two other minor coal workers’ unions staged a 24-hour strike today in support of T.A.N.R.0., which wants nationalisation to maintain Japan’s coal output at 50 million tons a year. This output is being threatened by the growing use in Japan of heavy oil in industry.
