BARLEY DAMAGE
Water In Store Thousands of bushels of malting barley in the store of the Canterbury (N.Z.) Malting Company, Ltd, at Heathcote, were damaged by water in Thursday’s storm. The managing director of the company (Mr J. H, Hewlett) said last evening that no accurate assessment had been made of the loss. He said that the company was back in full production and that everything was all right. About 150,000 bushels of barley are believed to have been damaged. Some of it was loose in bulk and some bagged. The flooding was largely caused by debris blocking a stormwater drain in Port Hills Road. The overflow ran down the hill on to a recreation area and the company’s grounds. Some of the sodden barley has been sent to a miller for drying. The company is the main supplier of malted barley to breweries and to the gin distillery in Auckland.
