PONTIFF’S MESSAGE

Call To End Conflict (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) VATICAN CITY, April 15. Pope Paul, who told 100,000 Easter pilgrims to Rome yesterday that there were promising signs of a settlement in Vietnam, renewed his call for a truce and fair negotiations. Despite the anxiety about his health, Pope Paul looked well and spoke firmly on the world issues which have been preoccupying him. He appealed for racialism, nationalism and class hatred to be replaced by universal love. The assassination of the United States civil rights leader, Dr Martin Luther King, had stirred the world, he said. The massed pilgrims, among whom were the exiled King Constantine of Greece and Queen Anne Marie, stood huddled under umbrellas in the rain-swept St Peter’s Square to hear the Pope’s Easter message after he had celebrated Mass on the steps of the Basilica.
