attempt to STEAL FUEL
Three Youths Arrested Three Rangiora youths were apprehended by the police, with tracker dogs, on Saturday evening after an attempt had been made to steal petrol from the shingle plant of Transport (North Canterbury), Ltd, in River Road, Rangiora. Mr R. L. Grant, manager of the firm, went to the shingle plant about 9 p.m. on Saturday, to check if any petrol had been taken. Quantities of petrol had been stolen in recent weeks. He saw a vehicle parked on the roadside and some movement near a truck. After immobilising the vehicle by removing the rotor arm, he went to a nearby house and telephoned the police. A police dog followed a scent from the shingle plant east through a plantation and riverbod scrub to the Ashley River rubbish tip, then south to High Street, Rangiora. One of the youths was walking in the main business area of the town about 10.30 p.m. when a police dog ran up and sat in front of him. The other two youths were apprehended soon afterwards in the middle of the town. Mr Grant said yesterday that constables, with the dogs, arrived from Christchurch only 20 minutes after his call. Their vehicle had been escorted by officers of the I Transport Department.
