Martin Luther King
Sir, All decent-minded people must feel nothing but horror at the terrible slaying of Dr Martin Luther King, and the looting and rioting that have taken place in America since his death. But the fact that another wonderful person with ideals has been destroyed must make us wonder if America has the right to call itself “leader of the Western world." By virtue of its great wealth this title automatically belongs to America, but a country containing so many people who turn to violence at any setback surely cannot be classed as a stable nation. Mammon seems to be the god of America and anyone who possesses ideals of another and better kind must apparently be dragged down and crushed. I would say, not “God bless America,” but “God help America" and “God help us all."—Yours, etc., HOUSEWIFE. April 9, 1968.
