Ben Lomond In St Leger

•‘The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND. Even with the going so much against him, Ben Lomond will be the Great Northern St Leger favourite at Ellerslie today.

On reasonable footing none in the field would approach him, but the track is bound to be much softer than he would like Ben Lomond has already won the Great Northern Derby and the Wellington Derby, as well as the Trentham Stakes at weight-for-age and the Avondale and Waikato Guineas. In his last attempt he beat all but Fairfleet at weight-for-age and that was tn his first start for two months. Proud Chief, which revels in the conditions likely today, seems likely to be Ben Lomond’s hardest opponent, even allowing for the presence in the field sf Whiti Te Ra. the winner of the New Zealand St Leger at Trentham. Whiti Te Ra has been beaten twice since he won at Trentham Proud Chief managed a good third last time, in a 10 furlongs handicap at Whangarei The Auckland Cup winner. Bright Chief and Super Count ; seem the best prospects for the! T.A.B. double. Bright Chief in the H. O. Nolan Handicap and I Super Count in the Islington; Handicap.
