WELLINGTON. April 14. A satchel containing a sum of money, possibly several thousand dollars, could be washed up somewhere on the Wellington coast. It was lost f rom a lifeboat which over • urned during the rescue of Wahine passengers on Wed nesday. The satchel is one of several containing ship's records and documents placed in the lifeboat by the Wahine’s purser before the ship foundered Some of the satchels were washed ashore and recovered but no trace has been reported of the one containing money. The general manager of the Union Steam Ship Company (Mr F. K. Macfarlane) confirmed that a sum of moneyplaced in a satchel by the purser had been lost when a lifeboat overturned. Mr Macfarlane said it was not known what sum was involved. A police overcoat, containing a fortnight’s pay, given to a survivor of the Wahine at Eastbourne on Wednesday by a Lower Hutt constable has still not been recovered. The coat is the property of Constable K. Ponga, of the Lower Hutt Police Station.
