JAPAN’S “UMBRELLA” DEFENCE SYSTEM.—An advanced air-defence control system, designed to provide a computer-controlled “umbrella” of defence over all Japan, has been officially accepted by the Self-Defence Agency of Japan. The Japanese B.A.D.G.E. (Base Air Defence Ground Environment) system was manufactured and installed at sites from northern Hokkaido to the southern end of Kyushu by the Nippon Aviotronics Company, Ltd. TOP: Three sketches showing the control, blanketing zones of Japan against approaching hostile aircraft, and surface-to-air defence missiles. BOTTOM: The control room in operation.
