Sumner unlucky not to win cricket contest

SUCCESSIVE losses by two ° and four runs by the second-placed team, Sumner, enabled Beckenham to take a clear lead and win the Canterbury Suburban Cricket Association’s senior competition.

The two defeats, in the eighth and ninth rounds, followed an equally frustrating result for Sumner when it met Beckenham in the previous round. Sumner, after being favourably placed at the end of the first day, was unfortunate not to beat the championshipwinner when the second day was washed out by rain. With K. Tucker leading the aggregates, well supported by J. Adams and B. Davison, Beckenham usually scored consistently. The accurate bowling had most opponents struggling. K. Townsend again took more than 50 wickets while Davison and Adams proved capable all-rounders.

Although four batsmen averaged more than 20, the Sumner batting was not always strong and Its aggregate was much lower than the previous season. B. Buckner was by far the most successful bowler. Bumside, which held its third position was rather disappointing and far from consistent even though six players had batting averages of more than 20 and only 12 wickets separated the six leading bowlers. The promoted Aranui team performed reasonably well and should be improved

with the experience gained during the season. E. Courtier and K. Whiting were capable of scoring solid opening partnerships while J. Moorhead took 36 wickets to be the most impressive bowler. Weak bowling attacks cost

Waltham and Merivale competition points as they struggled to dismiss opposing teams. However, the Clark brothers (Waltham) and M. Cully and W. Campbell (Merivale) had good seasons with the bat. Leading averages were:—
