RACING Dalvui Likely Winner Of Adams Handicap

Dalvui, one of the early favourites for the $7200 George Adams Handicap at Riccarton on Monday, will be flown to Christchurch from Palmerston North with five other North Island gallopers this morning.

The Hastings-trained DalvuJ was to have been /Sown to Christchurch on Thursday but; these arrangements had to be altered because of the weather. On Thursday morning Mr E. W. Symes’s Ormond Gold Cup winner showed his fitness in running six furlongs on the course proper at Hastings in Imin 16 3-ssec, the last three in 39 3-ssec. He was accompanied by his stablemate, Agricole, which will run in the Feilding Cup today. Dalvui is top-weight with 8-9 in the George Adams Handicap. He has 41b more than Point Duty, which is expected to be the only other North Island runner. A start for the Awapunitrained Look Up is unlikely and N. Eastwood has been engaged to ride the Riccarton light-weight. Shipmaster. Shipmaster is essentially a dry-track performer and although a storm-battered Riccarton has had much rain this week, the track was drying out remarkably yesterday in a stiff south-westerly. Royal Blue’s Riccarton trainer, J. R. Shaw, is “standing by” as regards a rider, and Eastwood coulc switch to his recent winner if track conditions are not expected to suit Shipmaster. Royal Blue, like Shipmaster, is on the minimum, but unlike the Messmate gelding he has shown ability to handle soft ground. Point Duty, from Levin, Carpenter, from Wingatui, and Riccarton’s consistent Millie Small also have form on rain-affected tracks besides winning on top of the ground. Carpenter won the Fendalton Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting last season, having also won a Dunedin Cup with 8-4 at a mile and a half and several other middle distance races in all seasons. Carpenter should be a formidable Otago challenger. Won Last Year Segundo, the runner-up to Carpenter in the 1966 Dunedin Cup, was last year’s George Adams Handicap winner, and this season he has improved a solid Canterbury record with a win at Rangiora on Labour Day shortly before his third in the New Zealand Cup. Millie Small was another star of the autumn racing at Riccarton a year ago. One of her three wins at that meeting was over a mile and a half against the hack stayers on the final day. Millie Small goes into Monday’s race as winner of her last two races, so she must rate as one of the South Island’s brightest prospects. Royal Master, this season’s Timaru Cup winner, is another with prospects at 7-2 on a track likely to show him to best advantage. He did not have a trouble-free run when fourth behind Royal Blue at Rangiora on April 1. Continued improvement in the weather and the track should give Dalvui every chance to justify his favouritism, but if there are any weaknesses in his make-up at the distance Carpenter, Millie Small, Shipmaster, and Point Duty could expose them. Second Leg James Arthur and Glamis Lad, from Washdyke, Captain’s Command, from Wingatui, and the Woodville three-year-old, Pasa Doble, could supply the main strength of the field for the Great Easter Handicap, the second leg" of Monday's T.A.B. double. Few individual efforts of the Easter racing will attract

more attention than James Arthur’s attempt to lengthen his present sequence of five wins. Two of those wins were in open class and were impressive enough to interest the leading jockey, W. D. Skelton, in taking the mount. James Arthur’s latest win i was at Oamaru on March 25, and came after an exhibition of power galloping in winning over seven furlongs at Ashburton. Captain’s Command made a big impression in winning at Beaumont last Saturday after being out of action for a few weeks with a seedy toe. Captain’s Command has 8-7, 31b below Middy, winner of this race as a three-year-old with 7-9 two years ago. Glamis Lad’s second at Rangiora held nothing but promise for immediate engagements as it was only his second start after a spell. Tumble beat him narrowly at Rangiora, but Glamis Lad would have pegged the Riccarton sprinter back in a few more strides. Pasa Doble looked like Derby material when he won at Riccarton at the Grand National meeting. He struck a lean patch later but a third at Masterton on February 28 held promise of a return to top form. He had the run of the race all against him down on the inside when he failed in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham on March 2. The Great Easter Handicap will be his first start since then. Tracey, a Levin-trained Great Easter contender, has found success elusive as a six-year-old this season. Manana was in the top flight of sprinters earlier in his career, but a dead or soft track could dull the early speed of the swiftest of his rivals enough for him to employ effectively one of the powerful finishes for which he has been noted. Red Chips is one of the most consistent of the Riccarton sprinters and as a winner the last time he raced there besides a fast-finishing fourth at Rangiora on April 1 he holds a chance likely to appeal to many.
