RACING

Billy Joe Out; Debbie Marie Now Favoured

Billy Joe sprained a joint at Riccarton on Saturday and will be out of action for at least two months.

Mr w. H. Williamson’s three - year - old would probably have been favourite for the Rangiora Handicap, the second leg of the North Canterbury Racing Club’s T.A.B. double at Rangiora today.

The leading jockey, W. D. Skelton, who had been engaged for Billy Joe, will now ride Seminole, which will be having her first start from V. Clutterbuck’s stable. Seminole has done much of he r racing at middle distances, but has been freshened since she last raced, at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting in February With Billy Joe missing from the field, Lady Fort has brighter prospects of repeating her success of last week over Rangiora’s six-furlong course.

But Debbie Marie, another of the principals in a spectacular finish—she finished a close third—has prospects equally appealing in this field.

Krazikid, Serengeti and Tumble looked ready for anything when they sprinted in dashing style at Riccarton on Saturday. They lengthen the list of possibilities, and such a list would not be complete without Glamis Lad, whose race at Rangiora last week, his first since November, should have done him no end of good. Segundo seems assured of favouritism for the President’s Handicap, the first leg

of today’s T.A.B. double now there is a prospect of fast footing to offset his lack of middle distance racing lately. Segundo’s peak form looks a good deal better than that of any of the others in the field, though Takatua might have put him to the test if the ground had been soft or worse.

Joe Doe is an unlikely runner in the Autumn Maiden Handicap, and A. J. Stokes will now ride Summer Trial. Another new mount for Stokes is Running Scared in the President’s Handicap. The Wanganui jockey, J A. Messent, will return to ride members of J. Lalor’s Reefton team—Reefton Queen, Prince Magundi, Silver Fountain, Count Down, and Debbie Marie. Messent has also been engaged for Cattegat. Fields: FIRST LEG OF ON-COURSE DOUBLE Noon.— CUST HIGH-WEIGHT $500; 11m. st lb
