DEODATUS WINS EASILY

Daodatu*, a close relation of an earlier champion trotter, Certissimus, pained a decisive win at the end of a fairly rough contest for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes. J. J. Brophy, who trains Deodatus at Pleasant Point for his brother, Mr K. A. Brophy, had the filly “prominently placed throughout. She was close to All Alone and Kilarno from the half-mile to the straight entrance, where Final Donn was four wide, ahead of Carsonelli, Transmitter Sound and Dangerman, which was making ground. Deodatus did not give Brophy an easy drive as she was in dined to run in. All Alone broke inside the last halffurlong and this left Deodatus clear. She won by two lengths and a half from Final Donn, which broke near the seven furlongs when in front. He had his preparation for the race interrupted as a result of a stone bruise when he worked at Addington on Tuesday, so there was much merit in his effort.

Transmitter Sound, a good way back until late, put in a fine run to finish a nose behind Final Donn, with a length and a half to All Alone, in a gallop.

J. J. Brophy has been a staunch supporter of races for trotters for many years, but success has not been frequent for him in recent times. A few years ago he enjoyed major success with Red Valley, and at times he was associated with a top horse in Will Cary. Although Deodatus paid $19.60 for a win, her success was well received.
