Woman Runs 35 Miles

The Canterbury woman harrier. Miss D Dixey, ran what is understood to be the longest distance by a woman when she reached 35 miles in the annual New Brighton 50-mile race on Saturday. She appeared confident throughout and was handling the running better than some of the men competitors. She had planned to run the race at a 10-minute mile but misjudged the pace in the early stages. When she reached 25 miles

she was encouraged enthusiastically by a car load of club supporters and found herself able to run a further 10 miles She took 6:31:0 for the distance. She took orange juice and later lemonade for refreshment and did not appear distressed at any stage of her run.

She intends to run in next year’s race and a number of women harrier club friends who followed yesterday’s race said they also intend to run in next year’s event. The New Brighton Businessmen's Association, which sponsored the race, also gave a cheque for $2O to the New Brighton Athletic club in recognition of Miss Dixey’s per formance and presented her with a special trophy.
