NURSES SHOULD ASSESS IDEALS
An h o n es t reassessment of their initial goals and motivation should be undertaken by all graduating nurses, the matron-in-chief of the North Canterbury Hospital Board (Miss D. M. Newman) said at the Christchurch School of Nursing graduation ceremony. “Does the same high motivation and interest which persuaded you begin nursing still exist, or have your ideals been blunted?” Traditions were being swept away and in many instances this was all to the good, but some traditions should be maintained. “It is necessary to look back from time to time to see where we have come, and where we are going,” she said. "You have strived for three years toward this qualification and you, and the staff, rightly take pride in your achievement.” But education was only successful if it were a preparation for continued learning. Graduates must be prepared to extend their knowedge. Miss Newman told the nurses that registration should not be regarded as an ultimate goal but as a stepping stone for individual progress. “Your medal implies a responsibility to those training after you, as well as to your patients,” she said.
