NAMING STREET

The Redwood Co-ordinating Committee should be asked to submit an alternative name for Godley Avenue, the Waimairi County Council decided last evening. The name Cory Square had been suggested but it was opposed by the Post Office and the Lands and Survey Department because of its similarity to other street names. The same fate had befallen the name Ferndale Crescent which had also been suggested, the council was told Petitioners want the name of the street changed “because of the unfortunate stigma attached to residents in their business dealings and social life, and also because it is felt that teen-agers living in the street are adversely affected in job applications.” A Magistrate is said to have called the street “the most ungodly avenue in the city.” The council has approved changing the name of Dalwood Street to Yardley Street.
