Link With Karamea

Preliminary studies indicated that the Wangapeka route was impracticable as a second outlet linking Karamea with the Nelson roading system, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said in a letter received at the executive council meeting of the South Island Publicity Association.

The association had written to the department asking for information on the progress made in the investigations.

Mr Allen said that walkover surveys had been made of two of the proposed routes, a study had been made of available information and local knowledge of the areas, low-level helicopter flights had been made over the three proposed routes by roading engineers and reconnaissance surveys had been made by ground parties. The cost of constructing and maintaining a road over the high passes on the Wangapeka route and through badly faulted earthquake shattered country would be prohibitive. “The scope of the surveys and investigations, however, is being extended and, as part of this extension, a walk-over survey of the Wangapeka route will be undertaken as soon as the necessary arrangements can be made,” he said.
