RHODESIA’S FUTURE
Ministerial Statement
(NZ.P. A.-Reuter—Copyright)
SALISBURY, March 19.
The Rhodesian Minister of Justice (Mr Desmond Lard-ner-Burke), one of the staunchest Right-wing members of the Cabinet of the Prime Minister (Mr lan Smith), has come out against Rhodesia declaring itself a republic. “If there is one word I don’t want to hear in connection with Rhodesia, it is the word republic,” he told a meeting in Umtali. “We are independent and will continue to be independent, but I think that when we are completely on oui own, we are going to be the Free State of Rhodesia.” It was the Minister’s first public pronouncement on the issue of a possible future Rhodesian republic, a subject of renewed speculation since the latest conflict with Britain, over the hanging of five African murderers by the rebel Rhodesian regime.
