Clean Sweep Just Missed
The Riccarton trainer, D. J Thistoll, went close to carrying off both divisions of the Trial Stakes at Ashburton yesterday.
Displease easily won the second division but her stably mate. Flower Girl, went under by inches to Conway Stewart in the first division.
In winning on Conway Stewart, the leading jockey, W. D. Skelton, showed how to wait in front.
Skelton steadied the pace down in the middle stages, and after Conway Stewart had shaken off a challenge from La Comtesse he had just enough left to stall off Flower Girl by half a head.
La Comtesse, which was at the winner’s girth from the half-mile to the home turn, kept at it doggedly for a close third, but the others were beaten off.
M. J. Skelton, the youngest member of the famous family of jockeys, handled Displease patiently for her win tn the second division.
Displease was ridden back towards the middle of the field for a start, but he brought her forward on a steady run to reach the front about half a furlong out. She then pulled away quickly to her winning margin of two lengths and a half from Joe Doe, which outfinished Mahal’s Treasure.
