Fast Run By Hack

Donald Mac showed his front-running powers In winning the Alford Hack Handicap in fast time at Ashburton yesterday.

Messrs D. M. McKenzie and J. S. McKay’s My Pal gelding sped over seven furlongs in Imin 24 l-ssec and had most of his rivals struggling in vain to keep in touch with him some way out.

Donald Mac was having his first start since the spring, so did well to last it out by a length from Gee Tee, which had led the chase after him.

Centaur, a four-year-old from Nelson, was the best of the others, but was a length and a half back.

Fair Gap improved several places from the home turn for fourth, ahead of the weakening Starless.

Decisive Win Port Bank recorded her first win for the Riccarton combination of Messrs P, R. Jones and G. D. Lee in the Barford Hack Handicap. Ridden confidently by D. R Tucker, Port Bank challenged late but so strongly that she won by a length and a half from Goudhurst, which outstayed Jewel Case by three quarters of a length. Tucker, who had won earlier on Millie Small, kept Port Bank at the tail of the field for a fair way but started her on a long run after the leading bunch near the half-mile. Yue Tue, which had been responsible for a good solid pace, led to the final furlong but was being hotly challenged there by Lady Velvet, Jewel Case, and Goudhurst. Port Bank then arrived with the last run and she was not under extreme pressure to go clear for her easy win. The favourite, Julmark. like several of the others, felt the effects of the pace a good way out. He finished seventh.
