Title-Holder Defeated

(N.Z. Press Association) HASTINGS. There was an upset on the opening day of the national women’s champion of champions singles tournament yesterday when the title-holder, Mrs S. Winstanley (East Coast), lost her first life. The Northland representative, Mrs I. Cobbald, beat Mrs Winstanley, 13 times national champion, 16-15, in the third round. After four rounds, the only two-lifers in the tournament are Mrs J. Osborne (Manawatu) and Mrs Cobbald. The one-lifers are Mrs I. Opie (Taranaki), Mrs G. MacDonald (Otago), Mrs D. Stables (Auckland), Mrs Winstanley and Mrs K. White (Auckland). The finals are expected to be played on Thursday morning.
