Chicken Sales Hit Roasting Fowls

The adverse effect of spiralling sales of meat chicken on the sale of roasting fowl was discussed at the annual conference of the Registered Poultryfarmers yesterday and it was decided to ask the Poultry Board to devote greater sums of money and urgent attention to adequate advertising of the roasting fowl.

“The meat chicken industry has knocked the bottom out of the roasting fowl sales in spite of the fact that the fowl is a cheaper and better bird," said Mr A. H. Rowlandson (Auckland). The chef of the Shirley Lodge Hotel, where the conference is being held, told delegates he preferred a roasting fowl to a chicken but that it would have to be broiled in order to gain the best taste. Egg Sales A problem encountered in many holiday areas was the shortage of eggs when supply authorities were closed. “In some holiday resorts during peak periods, eggs are extremely short while in other areas of the country there is a surplus,” said Mr F. A. Rose (Otago-Southland).

The board will be asked to try to increase the sales of eggs in holiday areas. No Incorporation

A suggestion that poultry farmers be incorporated into Federated Farmers was heavily defeated. “Although we have much in common with Federated Farmers and co-operated with them on many issues, there are some things, such as the present wheat price issue, which would make our association embarrassing," said Mr G. Gray (Otago-South-land). Mr S. E. Gunter (Auckland), who moved the remit, said that poultry farmers would benefit from closer ties with Federated Farmers. Cadet Scheme

The board will investigate the feasibility of setting up a poultry cadet training scheme on similar lines to the farm cadet scheme

“This scheme has a lot to commend it and I think it would produce a good type of poultry farmer and would train young men to be better farmers,” said Mr E. F. Porter, a member of the board.
