FENDALTON SHOPS
Decision On Zoning
A need for road widening and improvement of traffic conditions at the intersection of Memorial Avenue, Fendalton Road and Clyde Road is seen by the Town and Country Planning Appeal Board. It says this in its decision on 10 appeals against the Waimairi County Council’s proposed change of zoning from commercial C to residential A affecting most of the com-mercially-used properties in the Fendalton shopping centre.
There was considerable merit in the contention of the appellants that so drastic a change should not be made unless some other suitable provision was made for the possible relocation of business premises, the board says. It semed probable that suitable sites would be available for those dispossessed when the road widening occurred. The board had disallowed the appeals on properties on and in the vicinity of the north side of Memorial Avenue and Fendalton Road and on properties fronting Fendalton Road to the east of its junction with Clyde Road. Properties on the south side of Memorial Avenue and in the vicinity of the junction of Memorial Avenue and Clyde Road are in a different position, the board continues. The appeals would be allowed in part and the properties rezoned commercial A (1). All the appeals have been disallowed so far as they related to the proposals for road widening and realignment.
