LONDON, March 19
Foot-and-mouth disease, which has led to the destruction of 422,000 animals on British farms since last October, broke out again yesterday, five days after the epidemic was officially declared over.
The new outbreak occurred on a farm in Shropshire, on the Welsh border with England, where the recent epidemic began. The disease was confirmed on a farm which had been restocked after an earlier outbreak.
Restrictions on the movement of cattle were due to be lifted from the area on March 28 but, according to the Ministry of Agriculture in London, they will now be kept in force. Before the new outbreak, British farms had gone for three weeks and five days with no sign of the disease.
