APPEAL FOR AGED
Collectors Needed Collectors were still urgently needed, particula~'y after midday, for the Christchurch Aged People’s Welfare Council’s annual street appeal on Friday, the secretary (Mrs M. E. Lawrie) said yesterday. Money from the appeal would be used for the general funds of the council, and for help in running and expanding its activities, she said. It was hoped that last year’s total of $4900 could be exceeded.
The council will also hold a white elephant stall in Cathedral Square from 8.30 a.m.
Some of the money from the appeal would be used to maintain the council’s occupational centre in Orbell Street, which at present assisted 320 elderly people in Christchurch, said Mrs Lawrie. On three days each week voluntary drivers took about 80 persons to classes at the centre and between 70 and 80 other persons were helped in their own homes. The five staff members at the centre also visited elderly people in church homes of all denominations throughout the city, she said.
Another Important aspect of the council’s work which would benefit from the appeal was the running of Langford House which catered for 51 elderly men and women. Money will assist the work of the council’s part-time welfare officer who works closely with other welfare organisations advising elderly people on a wide range of problems.
