Addington Starting

Sir, —I must protest at the action of the starter at Add-

ington Raceway on Saturday night. A horse, the hot favourite, was started from the outside of the field when he was not drawn to start there. This horse had not delayed the start; nor was he unruly. Did the starter not know that in two of his three starts this season he had begun so well as to lead all the way? In addition be was not allowed to walk round at the start but was forced to stand looking nervously at the crowd. As the barrier was released the starter’s assistant was still holding him and it is little wonder he galloped a furlong. I do not usually write letters to the paper, but the public must in future be informed when a horse is to be handicapped in the above manner. —Yours, etc., ANOTHER LOSING PUNTER. March 11, 1968.

[The secretary of the New Brighton Trotting Club (Mr D. C. Parker) declined to comment.]
