54th Annual
Meth ven ; 58 miles from Christchurch and 21 miles from Ashburton, will have one of its big days of the year on Saturday. It is the occasion of the fiftyfourth annual show of the Methven Agricultural and
Pastoral Association.
This year’s display of livestock and exhibits promises to be well up to previous shows in numbers and quality. Entries at 3978 exceed last year’s tally by 56.
Cattle taking part in the Mid-Canterbury export beef competition will again be judged on the hoof at the show. Of special interest will be two young Charolais cross beasts, on exhibition only. Special displays this year will include nnp hv mem-
bers of the Ashburton Underwater Club in a special tank with perspex front. As well as depicting the sort of safety training that underwater divers are given, this display will have a lighter side with divers, among other things, blowing nn balloons and drinking
orange drinks under water. There will also be a home spinning demonstration in which wool will be shorn from a sheep, spun on an old-fashioned spinning wheel and then knitted in quick succession. The Koyal New Zealand Navy will be present with its mobile display unit and after all of the jumps have been completed in the ring there will be the everpopular steer riding. There is also likely to be a machinery parade and the final of the dog trial will be decided in the ring.
