ADDINGTON MARKET Most Breeding Ewes Up In Value

With an improved feed situation after recent rain, values for store wether lambs showed a worth-while improvement at Addington market yesterday.

Both adult sheep and two-tooth ewes also improved in value. Romney two-tooths, in particular, had their best sale for some weeks. Large galleries followed the store sheep sales, and while it is getting late in the season for buying replacements, buying-power was steady.

The store sheep yarding was 16,695 compared with 24,755 last week. It consisted of 1170 ewe lambs, 2390 wether lambs, 7170 two-tooth ewes, 5720 adult ewes, and 245 wethers.

A feature of yesterday’s market was the offering of three annual drafts of store cattle totalling about 700 head. The best of a line of steers from the Bluff Station, Kekerengu, sold to 5107.50, and most of the offering realised more than $95. Store Lambs With quite a large gallery following the sale, store wether lambs showed an improvement in value on last weed’s rates. For quality, the sale was probably the best for three weeks. Some of the small lambs, particularly the Romneys, looked Very well sold. Buyers had a fairly wide selection. There were again a number of pens of Down cross lambs, and the usual selection of Corriedales and halfbreds from hill country properties. Wether lambs appeared to be 30c to 40c a head stronger, with Romney wether lambs enjoying a very good sale. Good Corriedales and halfbred wether lambs sold from 14.10 to $4.45, with odd sales to $5.10. Medium sold from $3.75 to $4, and small down to $3.20. The wether lamb yarding included a sizeable line of woolly Romneys from the West Coast. These sold from $3.50 to $4.25. Shorn Romney wether lambs sold to $3.90. Down cross lambs sold from $4 to $4.40, with smaller down to $3.40.

Ewe lambs met a steady inquiry, with values much on a par with last week. Good average fine-woolled ewe lambs sold from $4.20 to $4.60, with odd sales to $5.55. Two-tooth Ewes A large gallery followed the two-tooth ewe sale, and values were a little better, particularly for Romneys. The yarding was generally a very plain selection, with a large number of small and mixed Corriedales and halfbreds on offer.

Well-grown even-woolled twotooth ewes met a good sale, and there were odd sales of Corriedales at $7 or more. The best of the fine-wooled ewes sold from $6 to $6.70, with odd sales at $7.20, good average sold from $5.40 to $5.80, and small and plain from $4.50 to $5. Although most farmers have completed buying their annual replacements, the demand was steady, and for all classes of ewes values appeared to improve by 30c a head. The quality of the yarding was average for this time of the year. The entry was much smaller, following several weeks of big sales, and there were only a few sizeable lots of up to 200 head.
