NEW FRENCH ARMY CHIEF

The French Government has appointed its 58-year-old Army Chief of Staff (General Emile Cantarel) as temporary replacement for General Charles Ailleret, Chief of the Armed Forces General Staff, who was killed in a plane crash on Reunion Island on Saturday. But no decision is expected in the immediate future about the choice of the man who will be permanently entrusted to cany on General Ailleret’s unfinished task as chief architect of France’s nuclear deterrent force.
