Guitarist Wins Golden Disc Award In Japan
(N.Z. Presa AMOeiattoni AUCKLAND, March 12. New Zealand’s first International golden disc award was presented yesterday to the Auckland guitarist, Gary Bartlett, by the Mayor of Auckland (Dr R. G. McElroy.) The award was to mark the sale of almost 400,000 copies of the record “La Playa” in Japan after being released in July, 1965. One of the reasons for the success of the record was that a Greek film company had come to Japan and made a film for which they chose “La Playa” as the theme music. The film was popular
and so tha record caught on, Mr Bartlett said. The record was not a great success in New Zealand, selling only 250 copies. The award was made by the Victor Record Company of Japan. The record was on the Japanese hit parade for four months and reached the No. 2 position. Under his contract to the Japanese company, Mr Bartlett will record 56 tunes a year. His long playing records have a guaranteed sale of at least 10,000 a year. He will be returning to Japan in May to promote his latest record.
