Tobin Bronze On Grass

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) ARCADIA (California). The trainer of Tobin Bronze, C. Whittingham, said on Monday that the Australian champion would race only on grass tracks.

Tobin Bronze, the favourite, finished ninth in a 15-horse field in the Santa Anita Handicap last Saturday, his second disappointing finish in big money races on dirt tracks.

“We tried him on the dirt three times and he was able to win only once,’’ Whittingham said.

•‘From now on, I do not think we shall run him on the dirt.” Tobin Bronze’s programme now is the 5U5125.000 San Juan Capistrano Handicap over one mile and three-quarters on grass on April 6. His jockey, Manuel Ycaza told Whittingham that Tobin Bronze could not run at all on the track and that he was slipping and sliding.

His trainer said the most important thing was that the Australian thoroughbred came out of the race in good condition.
