Criticism Of Clean Air Society
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, March 12.
The Christchurch Clean Air Society should be “shot down
in flames,” Mr B. W. Palmer told the Buller Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting. He was ' discussing objections raised by the society against the burning of briquettes produced in Buller. Mr Palmer said it should be pointed out to the society that many industries were capable of creating greater pollution problems than the burning of briquettes. A case should be properly presented to the society answering its charges. “They are all one-sided,” he said. Mr J. G. Thomson: They are fanatics. The chamber was considering a report on briquettes from its industries and commerce committee. It was said that Mr G. S. Edlin, of Ngakawau, had perfected the production of briquettes which used sawdust rather than pitch. Although the chamber did not pretend to be qualified to speak on the feasibility of the scheme, it did appear to warrant reasonable consideration.
The chairman (Mr S. G. O’Keefe) asked if the new briquette would burn cleaner than its predecessor. Mr Palmer said that the new ingredients pointed to cleaner burning. The chamber will write to the Mines Department seeking information on the present situa' and offering assistance if possible.
