22 Selected To Form N.Z. Rowing Squad

Twenty-two oarsmen were named to form the national squad after the New Zealand rowing championships ended at Lake Karapiro on Saturday.

From this squad will be nominated the crews to compete in the Mexico Olympic Games.

The oarsmen are:—R. Black (Wellington), D. Boswell (Auckland), M. Brownlee (Canterbury), G. M. Hawood (Waikato), W. Cole (Whakatane), R. Collinge (Hutt Valley), P. Delaney (W.), A. Dryden (A.), G. Forster (Northland), J. Gibbons (Star), J. hunter (W.), T. Just (C.), R. Joyce (H.V.), N. Mills (Whakatane), N. Connory (North-end), G. Paterson (Oamaru), R. Satherly (Union, Christchurch), G. Shaw (W.), D. Storey (A.), W. Veltman (Whakatane), A. Webster (A.), A, Boykott (W.). Rowing in a borrowed boat, M. P. Watkinson won his fourth national single sculls title in the finals on Saturday. A. D. Bone (Hawke’s Bay) was beaten by a canvas, with last year’s winner, D. Moleworth (Whakatane) four lengths further back. Watkinson’s win was one of the highlights of the championships, which took place before a big crowd and in brilliantly fine weather.

In the champion eights, the Auckland crew came from behind to defeat last year’s winner’s Wellington. Stroked by A. Webster, the Auckland eight proved their superiority, and deservedly regained the title they won on the lake two years ago. The Hutt Valley four retained its title by only a canvas. As soon as the race started it became obvious

there were only two crews in it, Whakatane on the inside and Hutt Valley in the outside lane.

They were striking blade for blade and stroke for stroke until the 1200 metre mirk when Hutt Valley forged ahead by a length. The position remained the same until the 1700 metre mark, where Whakatane lifted its rating. Hutt Valley followed suit but Whakatane slowly began to overhaul it. However, Whakatane left it too late and Hutt Valley went away to win by a canvas.
