First Rowing Title Goes Overseas
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. Australians scored the first success in this year’s New Zealand rowing championships, at Lake Karapiro yesterday.
Only one final was rowed, i the women’s pairs over a distance of 10,000 metres. The result was a clean sweep to the visiting New South Wales crews who took the first and second platings, with Otago third.
Already some of last year’s champions have been eliminated. The holders in the coxless pairs, Wakatipu, were beaten in the semi-finals when they could manage only fourth.
The race was won by the Whakatane pair, G. Veldman and W. Cole, who appear invincible in pairs rowing in New Zealand. Tension mounted in the champion single sculls, with three-times champion, M. P. Watkinson, trying desperately to get his new shell. It is locked in the hold of a ship from England and had to be taken to Lake Karapiro by last evening to be ready for today’s final. Auckland officials were making every endeavour to have it at the lake on time. Semi-finals of several events were rowed yesterday. Results:—
