Auction Of Groceries

Three-quarters of the contents of a grocery shop, worth $7500 before they were damaged by smoke in a fire, were sold in four hours yesterday by public-auction. Much of the offering was in perfect condition.

Housewives with pencils and notebooks rapidly multiplied retail prices as the auctioneer, Mr J. L. T. Dyer, of George Anderson aud Son, Ltd, offered the goods in small and large lots. Several times their calculations were wrong. A brand of coffee which rells ordinarily at 68 cents was sold for 80 cents to one buyer.

The demand for most items was keen and bidding was fierce throughout. At least 200 stayed all the afternoon and many more paid shorter visits.

Groceries not sold yesterday will be sold next week. The stock came from Messenger’s Food Store, Pages Road, which bad a fire towards the end of last year.
