FUTURE OF SOLOMONS
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) HONIARA, Feb. 5.
Independence for the Solomon Islands within the next decade would be “disastrous,” according to a member of the Legislative Council.
Mr William Ramsay, European elected member for Honiara, told reporters: “The majority of the people do not understand the present system of government, and are not interested at this stage in further constitutional development.
“Protective laws, a low educational standard, a heavily-subsidised budget, the absence of native political leaders and businessmen, over-emphasis on religion, biased Government information and radio services, and the uninitiation of the natives to a direct taxation system all need correction if the present standard of living is to be maintained on independence," Mr Ramsay said. “The country is facing grave unemployment problems,” he added.
