RACING Palisade May Put Next Please To Test Today

Palisade was brought to Riccarton from Wingatui yesterday, and his presence in the Provincial Handicap will give fresh interest to the major race on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s summer meeting today.

J. R. Dowling will ride Palisade in the first leg of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s T.A.B. double.

This has been a successful combination in several major New Zealand races, and it will be backed with some southern confidence to beat Riccarton’s Next Please, stylish winner of the Midsummer Handicap on Monday.

Another of Dowling’s mounts will be Lady Fort in the Amuri Handicap, second leg of the double. Lady Fort is another newcomer at the meeting, but she has won her last three races, the latest in open class at Kurow, when ridden by Dowling.

Win, lose, or draw, Monday’s Craven Plate winner, Billy Joe, will be put aside for a few weeks after running in the Amuri Handicap today. He was unruffled by his winning run on Monday, and this has strengthened confidence in his ability to win again today. Red Chips, Tumble, and Pango are others with promising form, and both Danny Kaye and Never again have the ability to surprise. Pango and Never Again are trained at Riccarton by D. J. Thistoll who must, justifiably, have high hopes with two other stable runners today.

Allspice, the decisive winner of the Middle Park Plate on Monday, is an obvious fancy for the Kowhai Handicap today. Pretentious is one of the

stronger prospects for the Cheivot Handicap after a second behind Sleeky Fox on Monday. There will be an on-course concession double on the Malvern High-weight and the Pareora Hack Handicap. Anasiwa earned favouritism for the Pareora Handicap with a close and rather unlucky second in the corresponding race on Monday, but the highweight field looks wide open. Warm Up. Gay Gabador, Agrippa, Solicitor and Baal Hanan all have something to commend their chances.
