THE GOTHIC TO BE CONVERTED.—The Gothic (15,911 tons) berthed at Cashin Quay. She is making her last voyage as a passenger liner, and on her return to the United Kingdom will be converted to a cargo carrier. The 19-year-old, twin-screw turbine steamer, the second largest passenger liner to berth at Cashin Quay, is a sister ship of the Ceramic, Athenic, and Corinthic. The four ships were built as refrigerated cargo carriers and were designed to carry more than 80 passengers each. The Athenic and Corinthic have already been converted to cargo vessels, and the Ceramic will follow the Gothic later this year. All passengers will then be carried by the Southern Cross and Northern Star. The master of the Gothic, Captain G. Campbell, who is commodore of the Shaw Savill and Albion fleet, is making his last voyage with the ship. He joined the company in 1927 and was appointed master in 1947.
