Life-Saving Award
Twelve years service to lifesaving in South Canterbury by Mrs A. B. Struthers, chief examiner for the district for the last five years, was recognised recently by the Royal Life-Saving Society, which awarded her its recognition badge. Mrs Struthers's work included arranging and conducting life-saving examinations, chiefly in secondary schools, and demonstrating and lecturing on expired air resuscitation.
For the previous seven years she was one of a panel of judges in South Canterbury. Mrs Struthers has also held examinations at Waimate, Geraldine and Fairlie High Schools, and in some primary schools and swimming clubs. Mrs Struthers said yesterday that the Waimate High School had set a good example by its attitude toward the teaching of lifesaving. Pupils in the third form were required to pass a test for a resuscitation certificate, even if they never went near the water, and there were signs that other schools would do the same, she said. Mrs Struthers became interested in life-saving when she was a pupil at the Christchurch Girls’ High School, where she gained the Royal Life-Saving Society’s award of merit. She was the school’s senior swimming champion for four years. i
